Why a fast website wins more customers (and a slow one loses them)
Speed is not a technical detail — it is revenue. What slow websites cost you in rankings and conversions, and what actually makes a site fast.
Tyler Markides

Website speed is not a technical vanity metric. It is a sales figure. Google has published research showing that as page load time goes from one to three seconds, the probability of a visitor leaving rises by 32%. At five seconds, it is 90%. Your slow website is not just annoying people; it is sending them to competitors.
The numbers that matter
- Under 2 seconds: where you want to be. Visitors stay, browse and enquire.
- 3 seconds: you are losing roughly a third of mobile visitors before they see anything.
- 5+ seconds: half your paid and organic traffic is wasted money.
Speed also directly affects rankings. Google uses page experience as a ranking signal, so a slow site gets less traffic and converts less of what it gets. The cost compounds.
Why most business sites are slow
- Page builders and bloated themes. A drag-and-drop theme loads code for hundreds of features you never use.
- Unoptimised images. A single full-size photo straight from a camera can be heavier than an entire well-built page.
- Cheap shared hosting. £3 a month hosting puts your site on a server with thousands of others.
- Plugin pile-ups. Every plugin adds weight. Twenty-plugin sites are common and consistently slow.
How to check yours
Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights (free, takes thirty seconds) and look at the mobile score, not desktop. Under 50 means you have a real problem. 50 to 80 means enquiries are leaking. Above 90 is where a well-built bespoke site sits.
The fix
Sometimes optimisation is enough: compressing images, removing dead plugins, better hosting. But if the site is built on a heavy theme or page builder, you are polishing a foundation that cannot perform. A bespoke build, written for your content and nothing else, is fast by default. Every site in our portfolio scores above 90 on mobile, because performance is designed in, not bolted on.
