Does My Website Need Maintenance? What Actually Happens Without It
What website maintenance really covers, what goes wrong without it, and what it should cost.
Reach

Short answer: yes. A website is software, and software that is never touched slowly breaks. Here is what actually happens without maintenance, and what a sensible plan looks like.
What goes wrong without maintenance
- Security holes. Outdated software is the number one way small business sites get hacked. A hacked site means downtime, lost enquiries and sometimes a Google warning label on your listing.
- Things quietly break. Contact forms stop sending, payment integrations expire, pages slow down. You often find out from a customer, weeks later.
- Search rankings slip. Google favours fast, secure, updated sites. Neglect shows up in your position.
What proper maintenance includes
- Software and security updates, applied promptly
- Regular backups, so nothing is ever lost
- Uptime and form monitoring, so problems are caught before customers see them
- Small content updates, so the site stays current
What it should cost
For a small business site, maintenance should be a modest fixed monthly fee, not an hourly ransom. Our own WebCare plan is £49 a month for any site we build, and it covers hosting, security, updates, backups and small content changes. The site is simply looked after, and you never think about it.
The alternative
Paying nothing until something breaks, then paying emergency rates to fix a hacked or broken site, is the most expensive maintenance plan there is. If your current site is not being looked after, book a call and we can tell you what shape it is in.
