Shopify vs bespoke ecommerce: which is right for your business?

Shopify powers millions of stores and is genuinely good at what it does. Bespoke ecommerce is better at everything Shopify cannot do. The right choice depends on how your business sells, not on which is "better" in the abstract.

When Shopify is the right answer

  • You sell standard products with normal delivery and returns.
  • You need to be live within weeks, not months.
  • Your budget is under £3,000 and you are comfortable managing it yourself.
  • Your checkout can work the way everyone else's does.

If that is you, take Shopify and spend the savings on product photography and marketing. Seriously.

When bespoke wins

  • Your pricing is not standard. Trade accounts, volume breaks, customer-specific catalogues, quote-first flows.
  • Your product is configured, not picked. Made-to-order, bundles with rules, subscriptions with logic.
  • App fees are eating you. Most growing Shopify stores pay £100 to £400 a month in apps. That is £1,200 to £4,800 a year, forever, for features you could own outright.
  • You want to look like you, not like a theme. In crowded categories, differentiation is the advantage.

The real cost comparison

Shopify's sticker price is low; its lifetime cost is not. Shopify's mid-tier plan plus typical apps runs roughly £150 to £500 a month. Over three years that is £5,400 to £18,000, and you still do not own the store. A bespoke store costs more on day one and very little after. Most bespoke builds cross over financially within two to three years, and from then on you are ahead every month.

Not sure which side you fall on?

Answer five questions and get an honest steer:

Do you sell standard products with straightforward delivery?

Do you need subscriptions, configurators or trade pricing rules?

Is getting live this month more important than a perfect fit?

Does your checkout need to work differently from everyone else's?

Are monthly app fees already eating your margin?

The bottom line

Platform when your business is standard and speed matters. Bespoke when your business is the differentiator and the platform would be a compromise you live with daily.
