Ecommerce SEO: how to get your online store found on Google
Most online stores are invisible for the searches that matter. The ecommerce SEO basics that actually move rankings, traffic and sales.
Tyler Markides

Most online stores get the majority of their sales from Google. Yet most store owners treat SEO as an afterthought, then wonder why the ad bill keeps growing. Here is what actually moves a store up the rankings, in order of impact.
1. Fix the foundation first
Google cannot rank what it cannot read. The essentials: every product and category page indexable, a clean URL structure (yourstore.com/category/product, not yourstore.com/p?id=4823), fast load times on mobile, and an XML sitemap submitted to Search Console. If your store fails here, nothing else matters yet.
2. Category pages are your biggest opportunity
Nobody searches for your product name until they know you. They search for the category: "handmade leather bags", "commercial catering equipment". Your category pages should target those phrases with a proper heading, a genuinely useful introductory paragraph (not filler), and titles written for the search, not for your internal catalogue names.
3. Product pages that deserve to rank
- Unique descriptions. Copying the manufacturer's text means competing with every other store that did the same, and Google picks one winner.
- Real detail: dimensions, materials, delivery times, what is in the box. This answers questions and adds the long-tail phrases people actually search.
- Reviews. They add fresh, keyword-rich content and the star ratings show in search results, lifting click-through.
4. Structured data
Product schema tells Google your price, availability and reviews in a format it can show directly in results. Listings with prices and stars get noticeably more clicks. Any competent build includes this; check yours with Google's Rich Results Test.
5. Content that catches buyers early
Buying guides, comparisons and "how to choose" articles catch people before they know which product they want. A store selling coffee equipment should own "which coffee grinder for espresso". These visitors convert later and cost nothing per click.
What to ignore
Meta keywords (dead since 2009), exact-match domains, and anyone promising page one in a month. Ecommerce SEO is a compounding asset: slow for the first few months, then increasingly hard for competitors to take from you.
